No Sleep Button on Desktop 6000 v2 Keyboard ???

I just upgraded only to find that MS removed the Sleep button from the new version. I used that button all the time on v1. Is there a way to program a hot key or something? There is plenty of room on this keyboard...especially next to the login/off botton. Why was this small button removed? :sarc:

Maybe you can reassign a button you do not use to perform the action of your choice through the keyboard software.

There's probably software that came with it that you installed, right? That should allow you to assign functions to the keys around the top and sides.

Hi Saidas,

Since it is a MS keyboard, you can get the driver software from this link below and use Keyboard in the Control Panel (Classic View) to change or assign the functions of these buttons on the keyboard. Hopefully there will be that option available to assign to it.

The 6000 was supposed to be an upgrade as in more features...not less. Can someone please explain the logic to me? So this means I have no choice but to go through the Start menu each time to put it into sleep?

Yeah, you will have to use the Start menu power button or arrow menu instead (2 clicks). The only sleep shortcut that I can find is to actually hibernate instead.

I've read some really bad things about Vista/Hibernate and is why I was trying to use the Sleep mode. Do you know if the Hibernate issues were resolved? If so, I can certainly use that instead. Can you think of any good reason why MS ditched the Sleep or Hibernate button? I think that far more would use that than let's say the Calculator button.

I'm not sure why they would ditch those sleep buttons. :confused:

Hibernation worked fine for me when I tested it. Usually the problems only happen if you do not have it set up correctly.

Hmmm....Hibernation is still available in the Start menu but when I click it the same thing happens as it does for Sleep...the monitors shut down but the fans/lights are still on. When I tap a key it resumes but how can this be when the fans/lights are still working?

The only place I see Hibernation other than the Start menu is in Power Options/Advanced Settings. What should the setting be here for Sleep & Hard Disk?

I found out how to create a Sleep shortcut that you can use. This tutorial will show you how to. You could then place it where you like to use it at. For example, Quick Launch.

Have some questions with the Power Options link. In the Advanced Main Settings screen it says for Display "Set to at least 1 minute before the computer (Sleep after setting above) is set to sleep. Usually set this as the same as the Hard drive is set to turn off." For Sleep "This is for the computer. Set to at least 1 minute after Hard disk and Display is set to turn off." For example I made setting for 20 & 15 minutes. The display would shut down but not the pc. I also don't understand this anyway. I only wan't the pc to Sleep when I give it a command, not after a certain time...same with the displays.

The other issue is that I'm directed to Start Menu/Start Search and to tyep cmd that is supposed to direct me to a Command Prompt but doesn't...only says that cmd could not be found. Vista Home Premium/32 bit.

Can you help me out here? Thanks

Those setting are for if the computer is left idle only, then after those set minutes, they would start shutting down to sleep mode. It best to have everything else shutdown first, then the computer. Think of it like a car. You would turn off everything else first (lights, radio, etc...) before killing the engine.

When you manually put the computer to sleep or shutdown from the Start menu, it does all of this at once. The set minutes play no role here.

The command prompt (cmd) also has a shortcut in the Start Menu under All Programs and Accessories. The .exe file for cmd is located at C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe. You can click on it to open a command prompt, or use it to create another shortcut from.

I'll back up a bit. I originally posted saying that the system does not go into Sleep from the Start menu (or anywhere else) and the recommendation was to try the links here. The info on these links was to go into Power Options and make these settings. So in short, my system won't go into Sleep mode though it did at one time. Thanks

I'm sorry Saidas. I was under the impression that everything worked, but you were just looking for a way to do it from the keyboard key or some other method other than from the Start menu.

Did the sleep shortcut work for you?

Did you check all the steps in the Power Options link as possibilities?

Sorry...my mistake in causing confusion. I have reposted both issues. The main of course being that I can't get Sleep Mode to work at all and I was also asking about having a Sleep button to use.

When I first got the pc, I was able to use both Hibernation and Sleep without problems for a few times and then I started having similar problems that others were posting warning about so I quite using both. I came back to this forum to see if it had been resolved yet and it sounded like maybe it had so I wanted to enable Sleep again but it just won't work. I don't remember doing anything involved if anything at all...I think I just quit using it and only used Shut Down.

have you verified what devices you have set to wake the machine up? most often it is a Wake On LAN setting the keeps computers up, but these days, with Multimedia PCs and wireless devices being all the rage, it could be a multitude of things.

For example, on my computer, I have 2 wireless mice (an old Logitech Trackball Optical Wireless and a new MX Revolution wireless) both of which are set to wake the computer on activation - I have found that turning off the MX and removing the battery from the trackball keep my computer asleep when it is supposed to be asleep. I also have a eHome Media Transceiver for use with my Remote Control, but that is passive, so it does not interfere, and in fact, the remote has a sleep button on it so I can enable sleep without having to be at the computer.

I believe the command for checking sleep devices is in the tutorial that Brink mentioned a few posts back.

One other thing - depending upon the number of processes you have running and the amount of RAM you have, it may take up to 30 seconds for hibernation to kick in as it is saving all the stuff from RAM to the hibernation file.
